Mac: How to Reduce Image File Sizes With ImageOptim

Reducing the file sizes of your images will have a massive impact on page loading and website speed in general. In this quick tutorial, you’ll learn how easy it is to significantly reduce image file sizes with the free Mac app, ImageOptim.

  1. First, go to the official Image Optim website and download the app. It takes a minute or so, depending on your Internet connection.
  2. Install the ImageOptim file you just downloaded. It takes a few seconds. That’s it, you’re now ready to use ImageOptim.
  3. Open ImageOptim by hitting CMD + SPACE and start typing “image..” it should pop up automatically. Click on it to open it.
  4. Find any image you want to reduce file size on, and drag it into your ImageOptim window. It will start working immediately.

In the example above, my screenshot image file went from a file size of 37 KB to 15 KB in a matter of seconds! 

That’s an image file size reduction of 58.8%! 

This is huge. Can you imagine how much of an accumulated effect this will have on your websites page loading if you do this on all your images? 

Oh, by the way, your file size reduced images do not lose any quality when using ImageOptim. 

There are many ways to reduce image file sizes, this is just one method. But it’s the fastest way to make your images take up significantly less space that I’ve found.
